- Turn off the flash. If you leave it on, it will cause on over-lit foreground with a dark background
- A tripod will eliminate movement when trying to use long exposures. If your tripod is flimsy, hang a heavy bag from the center to weigh it down
- Use the timer in order to eliminate shake when pressing the shutter button
- Use long exposure in order to get trails of light from cars or any other moving lit objects.
- Using long exposures drain your battery so be sure to have spares
- A large depth of field is needed if shooting buildings but not a lot of light will be let into the lens
- Up your ISO, it will allow you to shoot in lower lit areas
- Experimenting with these two modes, A / AV allows you to choose the aperture, and S / TV allows you to choose the shutter speed
