Vocabulary 1

AE: when camera measures light and makes the adjustment necessary to create proper image density on sensitized media

AF: electronic flash unit that reads light reflected off a subject, then shuts itself off as soon as ample light has reached the sensitized medium

Apeture: opening in the lens that allows light to enter the camera

Artificial Light: usually refers to any light source that doesn't exist in nature, such as fluorescent lighting

Ambient Light: the amount of illumination at a given location that applies to natural and artificial light sources but not those supplied specifically for photography 

Backlight: light that projects toward the camera from behind the subject

Bulb: camera setting that allows the shutter to stayopen as long as the shutter release is depressed

Color Balance: average overall color in a reproduced image

Contrast: the difference between two or more tones in terms of luminance, density, darkness

Cropping: process of extracting a portion of the image area
